Prithviraj Sukumaran’s ‘Vilayath buda’ concluded its opening weekend with disappointing results at the box office. The crime drama has managed to collect an estimated Rs 3.50 crore nett at the Indian box office by the end of the third day.
The film, which opened with Rs 1.7 crore on Friday, saw a decline on Saturday of Rs 1 crore. On Sunday, which was expected to show strong growth, it remained muted with just Rs 80 lakh (Sacnilk website preliminary estimates).
Day 3 occupancy shows minimal improvement
On its first Sunday, ‘Valayath Buddha’ recorded a Malayalam occupancy of only 14.19% across all theaters. The morning shows recorded the lowest turnout, at 8.23%. Evening shows had a moderate boost of 19%. Night performances also remained weak.
The performances shine, but the familiar themes hamper the impact
Output Jayan Nambiar Movie features Prithviraj Sukumaran in a raw and intense avatar, supported by Shammi Thilakan, Priyamvada Krishnan, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Rajashree, and Anu Mohan. As the ETimes review notes, “It’s good to see Prithviraj playing a raw character. The man has charm and makes the anti-hero engaging enough to make us root for him, but he stumbles a bit in the emotional scenes.” Shammi Thilakan was praised as “brilliant as Bhaskaran’s teacher, making us laugh at him, sympathize with him, and rage at his stubbornness.”
Anu Mohan is described as “charming” in the review, which also recognizes Priyamvada Krishnan’s powerful presence. In the technical department, “Special mention to Arvind Kashyap and Rinadev for their mastery of cinematography.” While the film was acknowledged as “well-made,” it was also noted that “with the fighting against male egos at its core and the oversized elements, it feels a little ‘more of the same’.
